Fort Opau, Makara

This afternoon I went on a bit of an adventure out to Fort Opau in Makara with Jayson.

Fort Opau was an integrated part of New Zealand’s coastal defences during the Second World War which garrisoned over 100 soldiers.  The gun emplacements look directly out into the Cook Strait and provide some awesome views into the bay below.

Between the gun emplacements stood the lookout or control room.  The picture above was taken from inside the lookout / control room.  This is most likely where the young soldiers would have stood sentry keeping their eyes peeled for any ships.
