North Head, Devonport.
North Head in Devonport has a rich history. From the early beginnings the Maori had a Pa located on the site but in the early 1900’s the threat of war from Russia sparked a number of coastal defence systems to be built, one of them being North Head. After the German Nazi Party fell the threat came from the Japanese empire. This threat was credible enough for North Head to be upgraded with the latest military hardware of the time, including the dependable disappearing gun.
Today North head is a place for people to explore and wonder what it was like. There are many underground tunnels and bunkers to find. The scenic views from the large gun emplacements are amazing. You can get a 360 degree view of Auckland.
