The internet has really changed my life.

The internet has really changed the way we as humans interact. It’s opened infinite possibilities to learn and share information that could change humanity as a whole.  You can do so many things like tell complete strangers about your latest cooking creation to giving your opinion on the government’s latest budget without really understanding it. It’s amazing technology that can be used on almost every mobile phone today.

I often wonder what life would have been like without the internet.  What would I be doing today instead of sitting here writing a blog?  Would I have become some kind of newspaper reporter and have my content printed?

Growing up I never had internet access because for the most part I didn’t have a computer.  My first computer was a small 386 laptop with a 100mb hard drive that ran Dos 6.22 and Windows 3.11.  When no one was home I’d use the phone line to connect to one of the many Auckland bulletin board services that were working at the time.

In 1998 I got my first desktop computer and along with that my first dialup connection. I quickly wanted my own website so learned HTML and a little PHP by starting my own website.  The internet quickly became part of my life and the main way I’d communicate with my mates.

Some 14 years later I’m sitting at home with high speed internet and now run multiple websites not just for myself but for others.  I can watch TV though my computer from that’s in another country.  I can upload my own videos and ask total strangers what I should have for lunch.

My knowledge of the internet has grown and so has the way I deal with the increasing information overload that comes with knowing what my mates had for breakfast.

The number of human connections made though the internet every day, every hour every second for personal or business.  People are meeting other from different cultures and lifestyles that could have only made that connection though the internet.    I myself have the internet to thank for a number of connections.  Social networks keep me in touch with old high school friends, social contacts and soldiers from different units I’ve met.  All this wouldn’t be possible without a few million computers connected together and people creating software for people in communicate.

Looking into the future I see more developments as most of them are already starting to show.  As our need for faster connections companies are moving from copper to fibre and soon (if it hasn’t happened already in your area) all your communications will be pushed through the internet.

This is how the internet has impacted my life… How has it impacted yours?
