Huntly, North Waikato, New Zealand.

A short drive from Auckland on highway 1 is a small town called Huntly. This town was built around the coal mining industry and is home to New Zealand’s most well known power station. The power station is run by Genisis Energy one of the larger power generation companies and employs many of the locals.
If you’re into history why not go back in time at The Waikato Coalfields Museum. The collections are housed in a historic homestead that dates back to 1890 and was originally built by William Tattley, the mine manager at the Taupiri Coal Mine.
Most days you’ll be able to stop across the river from the power station. The river looks amazing on a sunny day. Today however, it was brown, due to the large quantity of rain over the last few days.
Huntly, while not the most exciting place is worth a look so next time you’re passing though, why not pull over and have a look around.
