Run Philip Run – Summer Fitness.

Summer is sneaking up on us again and for many people like me, the signs of winter are still lingering around the waistline.  For most fitness gurus, keeping fit and toned over the winter but for the rest of us we’ve been happy turning to food for comfort.

Last week I decided it was time to suck it up put on my shoes and start pounding the pavement again.  My first attempt was pretty lame by any ones standards but slowly as I pushed myself a little each night I managed to pull off my best time ever.

One of the requirements of being in the NZ Army Reserves is a level of fitness.  For me, I need to run 2.4Km in under 11 minutes and 30 seconds to pass.  Last night I managed to run it in 11 minutes and 10 seconds.  I was positively stoked with my efforts and even bragged about it on Facebook.

After being nagged by Bruno a friend of mine in Palmerston North and probably the only one who reads my blogs, I started writing about my efforts but soon found I didn’t have the mind set right at that moment to put a few words together.

Here are some tips about getting back into running:

  • Make running fun, but don’t over do it as you are just getting into it.
  • Make sure your shoes fit correctly to avoid ankle and foot injuries.
  • If your running at night run with someone (safety in numbers).
  • Run one day then rest the next day until you’re used to running again.
  • Don’t drink fizzy drinks before you run or run right after a meal.
