Keep up with home via Twitter.

Since its launch a few months ago the Vodafone Txt 2 Twitter service has been free for anyone using Vodafone’s network. A number of travellers I’ve talked to who have visited New Zealand have said they love the fact that it’s free.
“I came to New Zealand from Germany for a month and have been sending Tweets via the service so my family can read them. For NZ$40 I got a prepay sim-card that worked with my phone. I changed the number on the twitter site and I was away” said Niles Jr to me while we sat drinking over priced coffee from Star Bucks.
He said his followers were protected so only his family and close friends could follow him. I had caught up with him and his partner a few days before they were to board their Air New Zealand flight back to Europe.
“It’s remarkable how technology has changed. One person can travel and hundreds of people can follow that person without even leaving their homes. Ten years ago you would have never be able to do this” he said.
We talked about his Twitter experience and I was quickly given an ego boost as the topic turned to how he found me Tweeting when I used the ‘#travel’ tag.
After finishing our coffee’s we went out separate ways. Normally we’d have to wait for a long time to catch up with each other now, via twitter, I know exactly what he is doing.
